My air cleaner took away 20 hp. If I put in the spec's for it - diameter - 31", 12" long, 1.5" of exposed filter area. The calculator shows an 11hp loss. So, guess you could take the figure and double it. :D

What are you doing going to a Superformance web site? :)

It was an accident really. I did a search, and second strike didn't indicate anything about superformance until I went to the home page.

That a pretty neat thread down 12 hp at 7000 but i think the nitrous fixes that when on

Are you sure of your numbers? I question that your air cleaner is 31" in diameter. I run the calculator on my oval type air cleaner that is 2" tall and I get a loss of 2HP

Are you figuring "oiled felt" That is the K & N type filter Paper or Foam is 3-4 times worse.

Not sure what type filter you're using. If you had one that was just a little taller (more exposed area), it would make a big difference.

I took a tape measure and measured all the way around.....which is circumfrence isn't it  Soooo, how do you figure diameter of an oval filter? I have a paper filter, so I'm headed over to get a oiled filter this afternoon. I'm finding it hard to get a filter that fits under my hood. I've also found that either the body or the engine or the hood isn't exactly center. If I assume that the engine is dead center, then the body/hood is offset to the driver's side by 1/2" or better. This creates an issue with using a round air filter. Wondering if this is something that all F5R kits have or not. I'm looking at a drop base with a 3" tall filter, just don't know if it will fit or not without trying it.

I think the FFR chassis offsets the motor to the passenger side for better weight balance. )also gives you more DS footbox room for pedals!)

scrap it and got to Velocity Stacks! :D

Diameter is the measurement from one side to the other. If it is an oval, they are looking for the width (which equates to diameter) and the length. With those two dimensions, they can figure the exposed area.

If you measured 31" around, you can divide that by pi (sorry, no greek symbols in the font catalog) to come up with the diameter 31 / 3.1416 = about 10" Is your air cleaner that small - 10" across?

K & N elements are not cheap. Make sure you have the size air cleaner you want before you buy the element for it. The engine bay should be able to handle 12" - 15"

It's a 12" long by 8" wide oval with a 2" paper element. I'm looking at a 14" round with a 1.25" drop base and 2" element, 3" if it will fit. Again, hood clearance is the issue.

Tim,

Check you measurements...something is not correct.

An oval air cleaner 12" long and 8" wide calculates to a circumference of 33.1"...not 31.

I would go by the actual measured circumference.

Depending on which is correct your area is either 62 sq in or 66.2 sq in.

The largest filter area you can get under the hood is your goal.

Make sure that any drop base air cleaner housing does not create a restriction between the lid and base that is a smaller area than the filter area. A drop base with flat cover is certain to be a restriction. The smallest vertical distance between the drop base and top cover should always exceed the vertical width of the air cleaner element. You want a top cover that is hat shaped for use with a dropped base.

Thanks Kerry, I will do some measuring today to give everyone a clearer picture of what I'm dealing with.
