    Default Central Illinois sight-seeing

Took Ian & Barb up to some Illinois versions of winding roads and some quaint US-66 roads and artifacts. Great day to be out. 20190505_154407.jpg

Yes, Soulsby's Service Station on 1st St, Mount Olive - used to be Old Rt. 66 in the 30's

Paul, I'm going to attempt to plan a route via old 66, to take us from St. Louis to Springfield for the event at the end of the year (9/28)
    International Route 66 Mother Road Festival 9/27 - 9/29

I'm not confident that AAA will be able to help much and when I did some research on my own, the route is tough to document.
Did you offer to help me plan a route earlier this year? What was the route you guys ran this weekend (did you avoid the Hi-way? that's my objective)

I'll be happy to help. For the most part, Old 66 is now labeled Rt. 4 and a couple side roads. I did this route to avoid the Interstates.

This link will give you an idea of where the old routes ran. https://www.theroute-66.com/route-66-illinois-map.html

The most famous part (1945-on) was overlayed by I-55. There is still some frontage roads around Litchfield that were the original road.

I took some side roads thru Alton area, just to avoid I-270/I-55 around the river and then hit Old 66 around Staunton and followed it up thru Mt. Olive into Litchfield. You could jog back over to Rt.4 and continue up if you want to avoid I-55. It's the only road that parallels 55 north to Springfield.

Yeah I thought that looked familiar. My aunt still lives there and my grandfathers old 2 bay gas station was just down the street from the bowling alley and school. I plan on going back over there and giving her a ride when the current one is complete. Thanks for the memories.
